Humidity Sensing Properties of ZnWO4-ZnO Composite

Abstract: Humidity sensing properties of composites made from ZnWO4 (ZW) and ZnO (ZO) were investigated. Sintered polycrystalline disks of ZnWO4 (ZWZO-10) and ZnO (ZWZO-01) and composites of ZW and ZO in the mole ratios of ZWZO-8:2, 6:4, 4:6 and 2:8 (ZWZO-8:2 designated as 80 mole % of ZnWO4 and 20 mole % of ZnO), respectively, were subjected to DC resistance measurements as a function of relative humidity in the range of 5-98% RH. The DC conductance measurements were carried out on the samples from which the activation energies were determined. The composite ZWZO-28 has the highest humidity sensitivity (3 x 103) with a response (2 min.) and recovery (7 min.) time attributed to the optimization of pore size and its even distribution in a biphasic matrix which is a metastable mixture of the two terminal phases, ZnWO4 and ZnO.
