Abstract: This article describes the development stages and the obtained results in a design and testing of a wheelchair controlled by bi-axial accelerometers placed at the user head top. This proposed system has the primary goal to facilitate the handicapped persons locomotion who has only the head movement or difficulty moving the hand-arm segment, thus presenting a different control type of most motorized wheelchairs in market. The results showed that low cost acceleration sensors are efficient to assistive technology systems.
