A Line Detection Algorithm for Road Remarking

Abstract: This paper presents a line detection algorithm for the purposes of the remarking of roads. The process will determine the position of the line relative to the spraying nozzle and give measurements to correct any error. Current methods are not suited for this purpose due to the accuracy required and the need for clear markings. An algorithm is presented that first detects markings using a symmetrical local threshold then determines if they are markings using a radon transform. A model of the markings is created from quadrilaterals and the relevant information required for the actuation of the nozzle can be easily extracted. This process worked well for a variety of line situations including faded and dirty lines. It also worked at a fast enough pace to be of sue for real-time correcting of the nozzle.
