Intrinically Safe Low-Cost Accelerometers

Gaithersburg, MD – January 2005 – Wilcoxon Research, the leading supplier of quality vibration sensors, has received Intrinsic Safety certification for two of its most popular low cost accelerometer series: the 786 and 787. These accelerometers are now rated to operate in hazardous areas in accordance with U.S., Canadian and European standards.

Obtaining the Intrinsic Safety (IS) certification means that Wilcoxon’s 786 IS Series and 787 IS Series units can be used where flammable or explosive materials are present without causing electrical sparks or “hot spots” strong enough to cause ignition of gases or dusts in the air.  Standards for IS certification are established by the NFPA in the U.S., the CSA in Canada, and CENELEC in the European Union.

"Our 786 and 787 series are among Wilcoxon’s best selling low-cost accelerometers, and have actually met the standards of Intrinsic Safety for several years,” says Steve Wichtendahl, Vice President of Sales & Marketing. "Submitting them to testing for official certification was an obvious decision.  Now we can offer Wilcoxon’s Total Lower Cost of Ownership to customers for use in their hazardous environments.

The 786 IS Series of top exit accelerometers includes an integral cable model (the 786F) and the first dual output accelerometer with temperature sensor to receive IS certification (the 786T).  The 787 IS Series are side exit units, and include an optional modified mounting stud.

Wilcoxon 786 IS series and 787 IS series are certified as Intrinsically Safe for Class I, Division 1 rated for Groups A, B, C, D; Class II, Division 1 rated for Groups E, F, G; Class III, Division 1; Class I,  Zone 0, Ex ia IIC T4 (zone approval for Canada); and Class I, Zone 0, Aex ia IIC T4  (zone approval for US).

For over 40 years, Wilcoxon Research has been committed to providing innovative vibration instrumentation, backed by outstanding customer service and a generous warranty.
