Sensor Interface and Buses: What do you use most ?



  It is my great pleasure to thanks all our IFSA members and visitors for participation in our Quick Online Sensor Survey 2005: Sensor Interfaces & Buses: What Do You Use Most ? Up to the end of 2005 we have received 583 votes, 154 suggestions and 29 comments with the following results:

What sensor interfaces and buses do you use most ?



The 'Other' option included: USB interface and Profibus. It was noticed that this quick online survey was very interesting and timely.


The popular RS-232/422/485 are still well diffused and adopted because of it is basically free and easy to program, good enough for applications where transfer rate is not a critical factor. It is very good also for laboratory application and prototyping.


In embedded applications customers connect to remote sensors and actuators with RS-485 using both MODBus and proprietary protocols.

IEEE 1451 sensor interface becomes more and more popular among customers but it is not available on the marketplace except as 1451.4. Very simple design approach based on the Universal Frequency-to-Digital Converter (UFDC-1) lets expand the use of IEEE 1451 standard for different frequency (period, duty-cycle, PWM, time interval, phase shift, etc.) output sensors. Even more, each existing quasi-digital sensor can be used according to IEEE 1451.4. The UFDC-1 does not only convert frequency-time parameters to digital but also can store TEDS and realize communication functions [2]. In addition, manufactures can use the UFDC-1 to produce traditional digital output sensors with popular RS-232 interface, SPI and I2C communication buses.


Today there are a lot of manufactures producing digital output sensors with different interfaces and buses capabilities. It is still difficult to find the one to suit the sensors' requirements. As usually, sensor interfaces and buses are strongly associated with their field of application.
